Our history
Our 7th generation family farm has been nestled in the heart of Lambton County since 1852 - fifteen years before Canada was a country! The Hodgson family has worked this land for seven generations (and counting!). We have a proud heritage of producing sheep since the early 1900’s. Since then there has never been a time without sheep on the farm. For most of this time purebred suffolk sheep have been a significant part of the flock. We are situated in the beautiful municipality of Lambton Shores very close to Lake Huron. We have been blessed with the opportunity and responsibility of taking care of this little section of land and we would love to share some of this with you.
I'm Michael Hodgson. I grew up working with my family on this farm. In 2019 I had the opportunity to move myself and family back to this farm where my grandparents and multiple great grandparents lived and raised their families. I graduated from the University of Guelph Agriculture Program in 2001. I ended up staying in the city and getting into the refrigeration and heating trade. I am still working a day job but with the help of my family and father, Fraser, we have a nice flock or 100 sheep. We have all put a lot of blood, sweat and tears (all literal) into caring for these sheep. We take great pride and care in what we have to offer for sale from this farm. Every ram, ewe or lamb we sell comes with our personal guarantee.
Our Sheep
Our sheep are being bred to offer the best possible genetics for the Ontario lamb market. Our Suffolk sheep are bred for width and length. They have excellent lambs that grow fast and look great in the market sale ring. They have a significant amount of British influence that gives them the width and strength that is quickly becoming more and more popular. We are most proud of our most recent lambs from our Stonehill 7J ram. We are hoping to be offering more rams and some ewes out of his daughters in 2023
Besides the Suffolk sheep we have a large part of the flock of commercial maternal ewes. This portion of the flock is being developed with some excellent Dorset rams. We are using rams with Australian and Western Canada influence. This is intended to give us hardy, vigorous and independent lambs with width and depth of body. Now that our flock is at the size we have been aiming for we should have some excellent ewe lambs to offer from these ewes in 2023.
We are currently breeding our sheep in the fall for lambs in mid winter to early spring. We lamb in the barns and turn the ewes out to pasture at weaning time in the spring.
Our most recent and exciting news is that our flock has been enrolled in the Ontario Maedi Visna flock status program. In late August 2022 we tested our entire flock for Maedi Visna and all 101 blood tests came back negative. As a result of being enrolled into this program we have biosecurity measures in place for our farm. If you come for a visit you will be asked to cover your boots with plastic boot covers while in the barns. We would be happy to have you come and visit to talk sheep and see our flock. Let us know if you would like to come by!
